You Love, by Maureen Anderson, AMACOM Books, 2008. Since
the Baby Boom generation, we have been raised with a sense that self-fulfillment
is one of our inalienable rights—yet most of us probably do not love
our work. As the longtime host of a radio show devoted to helping
people find careers they love, Maureen Anderson has often invited
listeners in to hear firsthand accounts of people who not only relish
their work, but live without regret. This book collects intimate and
revealing first-hand accounts of people who have made the leap from
the 9-to-5 doldrums into jobs that leave them feeling happy, satisfied,
and filled with the sense of contentment that comes from knowing they're
doing what they were put on this earth to do. New for JuneDoing a Number on English with Richard LedererRETURN to the TOP ^We

July 6 — Learn how to create stories that come together by organizing plot points, developing subplots, and keeping the right balance between them. Author Lisa Shapiro teaches this three-session class on Plot, Subplot, and Tension. For more information, check The Writers, Ink website at www.sandiegowriters.org. Tues. July 7 & 14 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 2 mtgs.) Crafting the Query Letter: That old saying, "You only get one chance to make a good first impression," definitely applies to query letters. A well-crafted query doesn't just introduce the article, story, novel, essay, or book proposal that's being submitted. Instead, it shares a writer's vision and passion so clearly that the editor or agent wants to help the writer succeed. A well-crafted query, like a well-chosen appetizer, increases one's gusto for the full meal. This course will help fiction and nonfiction writers understand what needs to be included in the letter, how to construct it for maximum appeal, and which common mistakes to avoid. Using actual examples, the instructor will employ both in-class exercises and out-of-class assignments to de-mystify the process. The second session will include instructor critiques of students' query letters-in-progress. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Sat. July 11 — Learn The Business Side of Writing: What Every Author Needs to Know about the Business of Publishing from Taryn Fagerness. This workshop fills up quickly, so register now at www.sandiegowriters.org. Sat. July 11 – Sept. 5 — (10:00 am – 1:00 pm, 9 mtgs.) Writing Children’s Picture Books: Let the rumpus begin! Do you dream of imaginary lands and mythical creatures? Learn how to inspire a child's imagination by giving them the tools necessary to explore the world around them. The well-written picture book entertains the child while developing their reading skills. In this course you'll learn about writing for children and you'll be asked to write and revise five or six picture book manuscripts. There will be an opportunity to read your work in class and to discuss and critique the work of other students. We will discuss the needs of the illustrator, how to approach potential publishers and the adventure of the manuscript once it's been accepted for publication. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Mon. July 13 – Aug. 17 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 6 mtgs.) Developing Unforgettable Characters: Whether you are writing short fiction, a novel, or memoir, characters are what draw your reader in and make them care enough to read on. This course offers methods for creating three-dimensional characters that your readers will react to, relate to and remember. You will acquire a toolkit of exercises to help you develop or more clearly define both primary and secondary characters. You will fill a notebook with characters and scenes you can use in a story, and write a chapter or short story featuring your most unforgettable character. Note: Participation is essential. Everyone is expected to complete weekly writing assignments, attend class, actively engage in discussions, and share excerpts from their work. If you need support or alternative ways for sharing your work, please discuss it with the instructor at the first meeting. Register online athttp://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Mon. July 13 – Aug. 10 — (Online, 4 weeks) Editing for the Web: Learn to write and edit for the thriving medium of our time. As more and more print publications go online, it's vital to understand the ins and outs of emerging media and technology. This class teaches how to edit for space limitations due to the various needs of web development, browsers and software. You will go beyond the basics to learn the relationship between text and search engine optimization, interactivity, meta tags and web design. The class also explores recent trends in Web 2.0, mobile marketing, blogs, RSS feeds, crowdsourcing and copyright. Note: Prerequisite: Copyediting I (WCWP-4V236) or equivalent experience. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Tue. July 14 — Join writer Judy Reeves and a posse of wild women writers for Hot Nights, Wild Women, a four-session workshop that will get you howling at the moon, surrendering to your wild imaginings, and writing with sudden passion. For more information, check The Writers, Ink website at www.sandiegowriters.org. Tues. July 14 – Aug. 18 — (6:30 pm – 9:30 pm, 6 mtgs.) Travel Writing II: This advanced travel writing workshop is designed to hone skills through writing and peer critiques. You will work on travel-writing projects of your choice (feature articles, essays, book chapters). Everyone will read several stories before each meeting, and then offer verbal feedback on those stories in class. You will have at least two pieces of writing critiqued during the term (if preferred, the second piece can be a revision of the first). Note: prerequisite: Completion of Travel Writing I or equivalent. Lectures will be minimal, touching on structure, writing with grace and style and the travel-writing business. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Wed. July 15 – Sept. 9 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 9 mtgs.) Memoir Writing I: Many of us have had fascinating lives, whether lived inwardly or outwardly, during childhood long ago or in the past decade. But when it comes to writing a memoir, where do we begin? The day of our birth? The day we left home? The beginning or end of a marriage? Memoir is most successful when it is not the "story of a life" but a focused part of that life: a dozen summers spent working on a grandfather's farm; a long relationship with a dying relative; the first year of law school. In this course we will explore methods for planning and focusing on what your memoir should be. Then you will work at creating the first 20-30 pages of a book-length memoir. Note: The course is intended for writers who have had some experience with writing personal narrative. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Wed. Jul 15 – Sept. 9 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 9 mtgs.) Feature Writing II: Successful freelance journalists follow time-tested industry practices to get their feature writing published---practices this course covers in detail. From scoping out markets and writing bullet-proof query letters to negotiating favorable terms and appeasing editors, every step of the feature-writing process is addressed through real-world exercises aimed directly at getting your work published. Advanced strategies and techniques include dealing with hostile and “unreachable” sources, the intricacies and abuses of off-the-record and not-for-attribution information, when and how to go under cover, wrangling publicists, the proper fact-checking of material, and much more. Note: prerequisite: Feature Writing I (WCWP-40122) or equivalent knowledge. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Thurs. Jul 16 – 30 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 3 mtgs.) Self-editing for Creative Writers: In today’s competitive markets, editors expect writers to submit copy that is ready to go. But how you can objectively assess your own work? In this workshop, you will analyze the similarities and differences between fiction and nonfiction self-editing, and you will tackle common editing problems. Does your dialogue drag? Have you buried your lead? Omitted crucial exposition? Told a story instead of showing it? Learn to fix these and other common problems to improve the quality of your writing. Note: This class focuses on content editing rather than copyediting. Bring at least one 3-5 page writing sample for group editing and analysis. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Sat. - Sun. July 18 & 19 — (10 am - 2 pm) Poetic Workshop at The Front, 147 W. San Ysidro Blvd, San Ysidro. The workshop will be divided into two days of four-hour sessions: The first day will focus on poetic structures such as the Japanese haiku and the Italian sonnet. Together participants will learn how these structures were developed and write their own poems using them as a guide. This way workshop poets can hopefully develop an understanding of how structure plays a role in a poem's overall effect. On the second day of the workshop participants will then begin to “deconstruct” the poetic structures by playing with metrical and rhythmic patterns, then seeing how other poets have adapted these patterns to create their own structures and reflect their own cultural experiences. Poets will finish off the workshop by developing their own poetic structures and writing poems based upon them. For more info on the Red CalacArts Collective, Calaca Press and The Front please visit: http://redcalacartscollective.org. Sat. July 18 & 25 — Spark your creative writing fire with Flash Fiction, a popular, low-commitment genre in this two-session workshop, led by Nicole Vollrath. Register now at www.sandiegowriters.org. Mon. July 20 – 27 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 2 mtgs.) Beginning Writer’s Workshop: Using the Senses: "But all art is sensual.... It is directly, that is, of the senses, and since the senses do not exist without an object for their employment all art is necessarily objective. It doesn't declaim or explain, it presents," wrote William Carlos Williams. There are authors who create wonderful plots, but whose characters and narrative nevertheless leave readers unengaged, aloof. Plot alone doesn't make good writing. Story only truly comes alive when words mimic reality through presentation of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. In this workshop, you will discover how to spark your writing by engaging the senses, by showing not telling, through lecture, in-class exercises, and group read-and-critique. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Sat. Jul 25 – Aug. 1 — (10:00 am – 2:00 pm, 2 mtgs.) Flash Fiction: The Art of Abbreviation: This form of fiction is called by many names: sudden, short-short, instant, fast, micro, and postcard, to name just a few. It can have as few as 50 words and as many as 1500. But there is more to the form than word count and in this workshop we will explore what it requires besides brevity. In our first meeting we will learn the genre through discussion, readings, and hands-on exercises. We will explore what works and why, and get some good starts on our own pieces and ideas for even more. In our second session, participants will bring a completed manuscript to class for read and critique. Note: No prerequisite. Open to writers of all levels. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Tues. July 28 – Aug. 4 — (6:30 – 9:00 pm, 2 mtgs.) Exploring Poetic Form: Explore the art of poetry and get a solid introduction to the tools that bring it alive: imagery, metaphor, sound, rhythm, rhyme, and, of course, form. Gain a clear understanding of the mechanics of forms such as Haiku and Tanka (Japanese), the Pantoum (French and Malayan), and the Ode (Ancient Greek and English). Discover and discuss the work of several of the great poets such as Pablo Neruda, Jane Hirshfield, Basho, Issa, Billy Collins, Robert Bly, John Ashberry, and John Keats. Last, but not least, you will compose, analyze and share your own poems in these forms while learning vital techniques that will enable you to capture and express inspiration in any written form, all within a friendly, encouraging atmosphere. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. AUGUST Sat. August 8 — Join us for Some Like it Hot, our annual Summer Writing Marathon. Registration begins soon. Check The Writers, Ink website for additional information at: www.sandiegowriters.org. Sat. Aug. 8 – 22 (10:00 am – 1:00 pm, 3 mtgs.) Beginning Writer’s Workshop: Making Scenes Come Alive: Each and every one of us has a remarkable story to tell - the key is in how it is told. Discover how to craft your tale into compelling scenes containing vivid imagery, poignant prose and snappy dialogue through the use of trigger exercises designed to break down any barriers blocking your creativity. Students are required to participate in hands-on writing exercises and take part in constructive discussions of their work. Note: Course is designed for fiction and narrative non-fiction writers of all levels in a supportive environment. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Tues. Aug. 11 – 25 — (6:30 – 9:30 pm, 3 mtgs.) Writing the Dining Review: Dining out can be one of the most enjoyable parts of a vacation, weekend, or even day. To add to the experience, learn what goes into writing a successful food review. In doing so you can branch out anywhere from a personal journal of dining experiences to food reviews in the newspaper or even travel writing. This class will not only cover the fundamentals of writing but, also, what to take out of a full, rewarding culinary experience. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400. Sat. Aug. 29 — (10:00 am – 4:00 pm, 1 mtg.) Playwriting in a Flash: Have an idea for a play but don't know where to start? Whether you have a finished or half-finished play, or are simply interested in learning more about theatrical writing, we offer a quick yet thorough overview of playwriting techniques as well as an opportunity to discuss your own work. If you do not wish to share your work, learn by critiquing the work of fellow-students and exploring the best examples of classical and contemporary playwriting. Topics covered will include: Creating Characters, Structuring Plot, and Crafting Compelling Stories. Note: Please feel free to bring a couple pages of dialogue, an outline, or character work to class. Register online at http://extension.ucsd.edu/writing or by calling (858) 534-3400.

LINZ Published by A wild ride for a generation geared to keep a 20th Century rendezvous with destiny, changing a nation's face and the lives, loves and journeys of most Americans. A pause in the trip occurs for one young soldier at Linz, Hitler's handsome hometown in whose shadow lurks a ghastly concentration camp. While billeted there with Patton's combat infantrymen his mind drifts back over circumstances that brought him there from midtown America, where he played the double dating game and danced to big band music at high school and college proms. A matter of ethics is solved in Paris' red light district before returning home and entering the work world as a journalist observing a wide swath of personalities, ranging from presidents and generals to stars from the country music, sports and film worlds PAID ADVERTISEMENT |

The only catch is that if you enjoyed reading any of them, you will write a short review. And if you really, really enjoyed them, please donate a dollar or two (or more) to the San Diego WriteWay. I have read some of Olin's books and can't believe they haven't been made into movies yet. They are real page turners and as good as any on the best sellers list. — Sam Warren, editor7/1 |
