Books Dropped from Curriculum

by Walt Fisher

A recent article in the San Diego Union-Tribune sparked a thought in me. The Sweetwater Union High School District has dropped the requirement for the study of long-form fiction from the English Curriculum. The idea that students aren’t reading novels as a part of their study of English is frightening to me.

I was wondering about the possibility of starting something like a visiting speaker program to get San Diego area writers into the classroom to talk about writing with high school students.

I wondered if you had any thoughts on such an idea.

BARNES & NOBLE CONTEMPLATES CLOSURES

Barnes & Noble might have to slim down its base of 1,300 stores as a result of the changing book market. With Barnes & Noble announcing that it is considering strategic alternatives, including a sale of the company, retail property owners have to be wondering if they are in for another round of big-box closures.

Whatever becomes of books as physical objects in this new age of digital distribution, Len Riggio, founder, is certain people will still pay for the pleasure of reading. Assuming he’s right, the more pertinent question is whether they will be spending their money at a Barnes & Noble. Sales numbers are down, and the company is valued at a third of what it was worth four years ago.8/24

INDEPENDENT BOOK STORES NOW ASKING FOR CONSIGNMENT

The program’s goals are to: “to increase sell-through of titles, allow booksellers to pay for books as they are sold, and further minimize returns.” Booksellers must order enough of a publisher’s titles to fill a dedicated space and agree to keep titles prominently displayed within their regular categories.

More Bad News for Bookstores8/19

Bookstore sales fell another .8 percent in June. Sales for the
first half of 2010 were down .5 percent compared to the first half
of 2009, and 3.6 percent compared to the first half of 2008,
according to estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.
However, sales for the retail market as a whole rose 5.4 percent in
June and were up by 6.6 percent for the first half of 2010. For

Amazon and Apple Investigated8/19

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is investigating agreements
between Amazon.com and Apple, the largest e-book publishers in the
U.S., for making deals that block competitors from offering cheaper
e-book prices. Both Amazon and Apple have made agreements with the
largest e-book publishers that ensure that both will receive the
best prices for e-books, a contract provision known as a "most
favored nation" (MFN) clause. Publishers who have provided such
agreements with Amazon and Apple include Macmillan, Simon &
Schuster, Hachette, HarperCollins and Penguin. Basically, such
agreements prevent publishers from offering a better discount to
any other distributor than they offer to Amazon and Apple, which
prevents competitive pricing for e-books. Blumenthal's office has
found that e-book prices offered by Amazon, Apple, Borders and
Barnes & Noble are identical. For details, visit

eBOOKS TO OVERTAKE pBOOKS
IN FIVE YEARS

“Within five years there will be more digital content sold than physical content. Three years ago, I said within 10 years but I realized that was wrong - it's within five. The same patterns Sony has experienced in the digitization of music and photography are now being repeated in the book market.”
                   — Steve Haber, president, Sony’s digital reading business division.

Local Author Finalist in Indie Book Awards

Adios, Aries, a mystery novel by San Diego-area writers Amy Albani & Leonie Tremaine (Pen name, Leonie Albani-Tremaine) was selected as a Finalist in the 2010 Next Generation Indie Book Awards, First Novel category. The book is the first in a series of "Horoscope Homicides," set in Carlsbad Village, California, with an astrological theme. Each book will have a murder victim from a different zodiac sign -- "Tough Luck for Taurus," "Game Over for Gemini," "Mob Hit for a Moonchild," etc.

Though the series has spiritual elements – astrology, energy healing, positive thinking – there's also a strong dose of humor and lightly sexual material, in a style somewhat akin to Stephanie-Plum-does-New-Age. Chiwah, the reviewer for Life Connection magazine, wrote that "Adios, Aries," was a "fun read from start to finish" and that she looks forward to the other books in the series. For additonal information, contact Amy Albani (& Leonie Tremaine) at (760) 529-0123; Website: www.adiosaries.com.

Just following her on the journey is the half the fun. But the other half is learning about the natural beauty and elegance of calculations. Ouellette's ever clear and always stimulating voice is a perfect match to the subject - and The Calculus Diaries is a tour de force." – Deborah Blum, author
The Book Works is located just east of I-5 at Via de la Valle: in the Flower Hill Mall, on the 2nd level, next to Pannikin Coffee & Tea. 2670 Via de la Valle, Del Mar, CA 92014. (858) 755 3735. For more info, please visit: http://www.jenniferouellette-writes.com/bio.html.

Thursday, September 16 — (7:00 pm) Author, Jennifer Ouellette presents her new book, THE CALCULUS DIARIES: How Math Can Help You Lose Weight, Win in Vegas, and Survive a Zombie Apocalypse. Jennifer chronicles her year-long adventure into the math behind everyday experiences. From rolls of the dice in Vegas, to roller coaster rides with her physicist husband, to house hunting and beyond, Jennifer shows that calculus does not need to be the dry subject many of us encountered—or skillfully avoided—in high school. At the heart of this book is the realization that math happens to all of us, all the time. Jennifer’s quirky humor and accessible writing style will convince even the staunchest math-haters that they’ve wasted far too much time neglecting this fascinating subject.
Jennifer is the author of The Physics of the Buffyverse (2007), and Black Bodies and Quantum Cats: Tales from the Annals of Physics (2006). Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Discover, Salon, Nature, New Scientist, Physics Today, Symmetry, and Physics World. She blogs for Discovery News. Ouellette is currently the director of the Science and Entertainment Exchange, a program of the National Academy of Sciences aimed at fostering creative collaborations between scientists and entertainment industry professionals. At the The Book Works in Del Mar.
