three were relocated to the U.S. from Kenya's Kakuma refugee camp as

and sign People of the Book. This event is
free and open to the public. For more information, please call the store

Background: From the Pulitzer Prize winning author
of March comes the journey of a rare illuminated manuscript through
centuries of exile and war. In 1996, Hanna Heath, an Australian rare-book
expert, is offered the job of a lifetime: analysis and conservation
of the famed Sarajevo Haggadah, which has been rescued from Serb shelling
during the Bosnian war. Priceless and beautiful, the book is one of
the earliest Jewish volumes ever to be illuminated with images. When
Hanna, a caustic loner with a passion for her work, discovers a series
of tiny artifacts in its ancient binding, an insect wing fragment, wine
stains, salt crystals, a white hair, she begins to unlock the book’s
mysteries. The reader is ushered into an exquisitely detailed and atmospheric
past, tracing the book’s journey from its salvation back to its creation.
Inspired by a true story, People of the Book is at once a novel of sweeping
historical grandeur and intimate emotional intensity, an ambitious,
electrifying work by an acclaimed and beloved author.

it also spent five years on the Business Week bestseller list. This
new edition features updated resources, anecdotes and examples that
are particularly relevant today, arriving at a time of economic crisis,
when many are struggling to pay mortgages and make car payments while
simultaneously weathering layoffs and watching financial portfolios
shrink.

Background: Law school prepares students to be lawyers,
but once they reach the real world, new attorneys often find they lack
needed business knowledge. Not only are they uninformed about the management
of their firms, but they are also unprepared to understand the needs
of business clients.
The Attorney’s Guide to the Business Mind
tackles this issue head on. Author Wes Anson, a Harvard MBA and noted
expert on the legal issues of intellectual property and business valuation,
shares keen insights in this practical, accessible guide for lawyers.
With his unique legal-business perspective, Anson reveals how businesspeople
view lawyers, why businesspeople use lawyers, and what lawyers need
to know about business and businesspeople. Case studies illustrate how
JD’s and MBA’s tackle the same issues in different ways.
Tue.
Jan. 27 — (7:30 pm) Warwick’s Bookstore will
host author Rick Wartzman, who will discuss and sign Obscene
in the Extreme. This event is free and open to the public.
For more information, please call the store at (858) 454-0347.
Background: Few books have caused as big a stir as
John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, when it was published in 1939.
It was soon the nation’s number one bestseller, but in Kern County,
California – the Joads’ newfound home – the book was burned publicly
and banned from library shelves. Obscene in the Extreme tells the remarkable
story behind this fit of censorship. When Bill Camp, a giant cotton
and potato grower, presided over its burning in downtown Bakersfield,
he declared: “We are angry, not because we were attacked but because
we were attacked by a book obscene in the extreme sense of the word.”
But Gretchen Knief, the Kern County librarian, bravely fought back.
“If that book is banned today, what book will be banned tomorrow?”
