Background: In 1994, Anchee Min made her literary debut with a memoir of growing up in China during the violent trauma of the Cultural Revolution. Red Azalea became an international bestseller and propelled her career as a successful, critically acclaimed author. Twenty years later, Min returns to the story of her own life to give us the next chapter, an immigrant story that takes her from the shocking deprivations of her homeland to the sudden bounty of the promised land of America, without language, money, or a clear path.
It is a hard and lonely road. She teaches herself English by watching Sesame Street, keeps herself afloat working five jobs at once, lives in unheated rooms, suffers rape, collapses from exhaustion, marries poorly and divorces. But she also gives birth to her daughter, Lauryann, who will inspire her and finally root her in her new country. Min's eventual successes-her writing career, a daughter at Stanford, a second husband she loves-are remarkable, but it is her struggle throughout toward genuine selfhood that elevates this dramatic, classic immigrant story to something powerfully universal.

When it comes to Hollywood, it's a case of always the bridesmaid and never the bride, except in his case he's always the snarky waiter, the mopey cousin, or Man #2.
This hilarious and bittersweet rags-to-rags story of the hardest-working guy in showbiz follows Fred, who started his career as a stand-up comic, from set to set as he tries to find a permanent home for his oddball character. With candor, Fred shares stories of his great adventures pounding the Hollywood pavement, including a humiliating encounter with Billy Crystal, a disastrous one-night stand with Kathy Griffin, and plenty of awkward run-ins at craft service tables. And he always shares his ups and downs with his skeptical yet loving mother waiting by the phone in Brooklyn.

May 30 (V 7:30 pm) — Warwick's will host Sam Halpern, whose hilarious paternal wisdom made Justin Halpern's Sh*t My Dad Says a phenomenal bestseller, as he discusses and signs his debut novel A Far Piece of Canaan. This event is free and open to the public. In order to be signed, A Far Piece of Canaan must be purchased from Warwick's.
Background: Inspired by Sam Halpern's own childhood in rural Kentucky, A Far Piece to Canaan is a novel about a group of boys and the shocking discovery they make-and the even more disturbing fate of one of the boys in the years that follow.
Samuel Zelinsky is a celebrated but haunted professor who reluctantly returns home to the Kentucky hills after his wife's death. The son of sharecroppers, Samuel has long since left his childhood life behind-yet now must try to reconnect with long-denied memories in order to achieve peace of mind. We return with him to 1945, when he first meets Fred Mulligan, the hired hand's bright and spirited ten-year-old son. Together with two neighbor boys, Samuel and Fred visit the Blue Hole, a legendary pool of water on the Kentucky River where the hill people believe an evil force lurks. The boys find the body of a dog, surrounded by twisted human footprints, and later discover a cave that offers further evidence of something terrible. Fearing that they'll be punished for their trespasses, they begin a series of cover-ups and lies that eventually leads to disaster.
Samuel and Fred promise each other that if either of them ever needs help in life, the other will come to his aid. Yet after he moves to Indiana, Samuel is ridiculed because of his "hillbilly" background, and rejects his past. Now, as he returns decades later, he is devastated to learn from a fellow classmate about Fred's tragic life story in the years that followed. He manages to make contact with Fred's troubled granddaughter, Lisa June. Samuel knows that it may be possible to find a kind of peace through Lisa June-but only if she can come to trust him in time.
A tale of superstition, secrets, and heroism in the postwar South, A Far Piece to Canaan is the surprising and moving debut of a gifted storyteller.

June 8 (Saturday at 7:00 pm ) — LCDR Rorke Denver will discuss his book Damn Few: Making the Modern SEAL Warrior at D.G.Wills Books, 7461 Girard Avenue, La Jolla, 858-456-1800 , www.dgwillsbooks.com.
Rorke Denver trains the men who become Navy SEALs—the most creative problem solvers on the modern battlefield, ideal warriors for the kinds of wars America is fighting now. With his years of action-packed mission experience and a top training role, Lieutenant Commander Denver understands exactly how tomorrow’s soldiers are recruited, sculpted, motivated, and deployed.
From his own SEAL training and missions overseas, Denver details how the SEALs’ creative operations became front and center in America’s War on Terror—and how they are altering warfare everywhere. In fourteen years as a SEAL officer, Rorke Denver tangled with drug lords in Latin America, stood up to violent mobs in Liberia, and battled terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan. Leading 200 commando missions, he earned the Bronze Star with V for valor. He has also served as flag aide to the admiral in charge and spent the past four years as executive officer of the Navy Special Warfare Center’s Advanced Training Command in Coronado, California, directing all phases of the basic and advanced training that prepare men for war in SEAL teams. He recently starred in the film Act of Valor.
“If you’ve ever wished you could read the testament of a Jedi Knight, here it is. Damn Few takes us inside the mind of a born warrior. Lieutenant Commander Denver has trained SEALs and led them in combat. He tells us what it takes to reach the superelite level, why he does it, what it means to him, what he thinks the future holds. This is timeless stuff, worthy of being read in the era of Caesar, Alexander, Leonidas—or a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.”
—Steven Pressfield, author of Gates of Fire and The War of Art.
